On April 24, 1915, the Ottoman Turkish government began the planned and systematic eradication of the Christian Armenian population. This became the first modern genocide of the twentieth century. More than two million Armenian civilians were exterminated between 1915 and 1923. 

This day is a national day in Armenia. It is also recognized in France, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, and Australia. The state of California and the City of New York also observe this date. 

Then president Gerald Ford refused to sign the US recognition of this tragedy in order not to offend the Turkish people.
